Tristania Illumination Steamhammer Us [Spv] Although we are just a few weeks
into 2007, I’ve actually been playing the latest CD from Norway’s Tristania for a couple of months now and have to say
that if it is any reflection on what this year is to hold musically we are in
for a very exciting chapter in the evolution of metal. Illumination
could quite possibly be the most innovative metal record that I’ve heard in
recent years. By showcasing a hybrid of influences all under the umbrella of
the metal genre, the band easily attracts the attention of fans on many
different levels. Inviting elements of melodic Goth, Death and traditional
Metal insights, the band have woven together a genuine article of metal
mastery. Empowered with three different vocal
identities, Tristania manage to evoke passion
on an unprecedented emotional and spiritual level, transcending the boundaries
of modern musical acuity and bringing into focus the stereotypically blurred
lines of cross-genre experimentation. From the dark and ominous clean vocals of
Østen Bergøy to the hauntingly
serene vocals of Vibeke Stene
and the death-privy roars of Anders Høyvik Hidle, Tristania’s triple
vocal attack leads the way for a very impressive and worthwhile listen. On the
music side of things, the band themselves reach a zenith of sonic perfection by
culminating their respective talents into one solidified unit complete with
mega-riffs, driven bass lines, and tantalizing synthesizer attributes. Stand-out
cuts include the opening track, “Mercyside” the
seductively entrancing, “The Ravens” and the compelling, “Destination
Departure” with its angelic-like harmonies. Tristania are well on their way to redefining
Metal as we’ve come to know it. They have become leaders in the new era of
aggressive music. No doubt there will be purists who refuse to embrace this
latest chapter in the development of the Metal genre, there always are, but Tristania encompass enough raw talent to overcome
any obstacle that is set before them. Look out for this band as they rise to
maturity in their art and take the world by storm. -Priest |
