Korpiklanni - Welcome The Woodland Clan

Interview By: David Priest © 2008 On Track Magazine.com
The evolution of Metal is definitely on the move once again
as the genre of Folk Metal continues to grow in popularity. Who’d have ever
thought that violin and accordion could actually be construed as viable instruments
of Metal? Then again, I remember when bands such as Dio, Maiden and Priest
received tons of criticism for their use of keyboards. What’s even more amazing
is that bands such as Finland’s Korpiklaani (Woodland Clan) who are perhaps the most popular
band of their genre and who sing only in their native language are finding such
massive attention from the American audience. I was recently privileged to have
a very insightful conversation with the bands bassist Jarkko
Aaltonen and get a thought provoking first look at this
latest sensation. The discussion included the bands stance on the purist point
of view, the appeal of traditional fans of booth Folk and Metal, the
limitations involved with only singing in Finnish and when we might expect a
U.S. Tour. Check it out!
