Ex Deo - From The Being Of God

Ex Deo

Interview By: David Priest © 2009 On Track Magazine.com

I’ve always been a firm believer in addressing culture through music and pride myself in saying that I have learned more about culture and world history from the bands I listen to than I ever did during my time in school. With the rise of bands evoking their heritage of pagan folklore and Viking mythology making such a huge impact on the Metal scene it seems only fitting that other cultures would jump on the bandwagon. Kataklysm vocalist Maurizio Iacono an Italian by birth has taken the next step in communicating the fascinating history of what may quite possibly be the most legendary empire of all time. I am speaking of course about the Roman Empire.  Ex- Deo is the magnificent new concept band that Maurizio has put together to give to the world a fresh look at this age old society. The album, Romulus, tells the story of how the Roman Empire came into existence. I recently scored some one on one time with Maurizio to discuss the strategy for developing Romulus and why he decided to do this a s side project rather than a new Kataklysm album. It is always a great pleasure to speak with Maurizio as he tends to lean much more on the intellectual side of things than many are probably aware of making a truly insightful conversation.
