Never would I have imagined that one of the most awe inspiring bands to affect me in my musical and journalistic endeavors would come by way of Canada’s veteran Metal protagonists Anvil. However, following my screening of their astonishing documentary, Anvil –The Story Of Anvil, I was completely taken back. If ever a band has been more deserving of seeing their dreams come to fruition it is Anvil and after hammering away at this business for 30 years they’re hard work and unmarred dedication has brought them to the very place they have fought to be for so long. I recently had the immense pleasure of speaking with frontman Steve “Lips” Kudlow in regard to the bands fantastic turn of events in their career and how it has affected them as both a band and as individuals. We also discussed in depth the departure of guitarist Ivan Hurd and the band’s decision to carry on as a three piece, the fact that a year ago the band were virtually at a loss in finding a record deal and now they have labels beating down their door, thanks to the success of the movie and what his thoughts are in relation to the band experiencing newfound fame today vs. 20 years ago. In addition he divulged plans for their future strategies and undertakings. I must say that beyond inspiration, Lips’ insights to the industry, told through the reality of their own journey has given me and I’m sure others as well a tremendously deeper understanding of the way things work, and I am forever grateful for this gained knowledge.
