Kiske*Somerville - A Match Made In Heaven!
Interview By: David Priest © 2010 On Track Magazine.com I remember a time when the thought
of a woman fronting a Metal band was the ultimate taboo. The idea of mixing a
beautiful voice with something that was so aggressive and primal just didn’t
appeal to the vast majority of fans but then again neither did the thought of
fusing classical compositions with heavy guitars. Over the years I believe one
of the key elements that have allowed the Metal genre to experience such
continued longevity is its ability to evolve and remain open to new ways of
existing, particularly those situations where at face value a concept seems
incompatible with the general mechanics of the machine. As it stands today,
females in the Metal world are very much a normal and widely accepted notion of
the modern playing field. What has gone virtually non-existent in the present
guise of Heavy Metal culture is a male/female duo. Enter the latest
collaboration from former Helloween frontman
Michael Kiske and the extraordinary talents of classically
trained vocalist Amanda Somerville in their debut release titled simply Kiske – Somerville and you have the makings
of Metal history unfolding before your eyes or more accurately your ears!
Amanda has spent most of her career thus far as a backing vocalist, contributor
and coach to other entertainers sans a hand full of virtually unrecognized solo
efforts but has now decided to step into the spotlight herself in a much larger
capacity with this new and innovative project. I recently had the immense
pleasure of speaking with her in regard to her change in direction and how an
American singer seems to fit so well within the European scope of Metal. Also
touching on the importance of words as she is very articulate when it comes to
lyrics, the reality of working with a legend such as Michael Kiske and the many collaborations she has lent her talent
to including Epica, Avantasia, and Aina
among others. Listen in to this very down to earth and intuitive conversation. |
