| The Evil Of Rock!
Article By: David Priest © 2002 On Track Magazine.com Since it’s inception rock has been considered by many to be the devils music. Conservatives and liberals alike have voiced their opinion, claiming that rock insights rebellion, evokes evil and ultimately is responsible for the decline of western thought and culture. Fingers are quickly pointed in the direction of free thinkers, trendsetters, and those who seek to promote political and social change. The reality is this type of thought process exists all around us and rock is merely an easy medium in which to gain momentum for the philosophical and ideological viewpoints that stir within the masses. In most instances the creators of rock welcome criticism and controversy with an open door. This type of publicity usually works in favor of the artist by giving them more media coverage than they could ever buy. Although many use this avenue as a means to obtain fame and fortune, there are still those who hope to make a difference by challenging the forever evolving world of art and culture in our individual ways of life. Throughout the last two decades rock has come under fire more than ever before. In the mid to late 80’s the mighty PMRC led by Tipper Gore wife of former vice-president Al Gore caused many a rocker to step up to the mic and defend themselves in support of their constitutional right to free speech and self expression. Not with standing the PMRC have become nothing more than a faded memory now and are all but dead in the eyes of most musicians. Undoubtedly the time, money and effort were not worth continuing the pursuit of renegade rock stars. This is not to say that the same themes that were so controversial don’t exist today, in fact they have escalated to new levels of insanity. What began in the 80’s with bands like W.A.S.P, Twisted Sister, Judas Priest, and Ozzy Osbourne has carried through to the present day with artists such as Marilyn Manson, Slipknot and Rob Zombie. These of course are the most extreme examples. Although a number of the musicians on the market today only seek to shock the same way some strive for fame and wealth there are always going to be the exceptions to the rule. Namely those who as previously mentioned have set out to make all of us a bit more conscious of our political and social stature. To say that rock in and of itself is evil would constitute that the music has a mind of it’s own. I propose that it’s not the music but the intent of the writer and their motives, and although at face value there may be the appearance of evil, many times in order to understand a particular piece one must take a considerably deeper look. Remember artists tend to be very esoteric in their compositions. Without completely dragging theology into the works, I do feel the need to address a few points in order to once and for all put to death this nonsense of rock being evil in nature. First, let us consider the existence of evil. In taking a logical look at the issue, one can easily deduce that in order for a person to conceive of evil they must also comprehend it’s counter part, that which is good. In any case the opportunity for both exist and can only be determined when taking into account the nature of man, which makes room for a discussion all it‘s own. Secondly, since when is the evolution of a species or the advancement of our technology considered to be a bad thing? If we were to hold to this type of ignorant thinking we would most certainly send ourselves back to the dark ages and might as well return to the times of the inquisition and the justice system of the Salem witch trials. Third, we should understand that if it were not for the many people who have pushed the issues of change through art, music, and literature, the rights and privileges we all hold so dearly would not exist. In closing I would submit that I am aware of those who endorse satanic themes in their music and life style. I’m also aware of those on the opposite end of the spectrum; artists that choose to present a more positive influence to society. I believe there are musicians who rock and there are those who don’t. I myself don’t necessarily believe in the philosophies of certain groups, but refuse to discriminate based on their individual points of view. I instead choose to hold to my own personal convictions in regard to such matters. Ultimately I encourage everyone to make their own decisions in what they accept or reject, but offer these simple words of wisdom, judge only by the heart and seek truth at all costs. -Priest |
