ROCK REPORT! 5/13/09
Finnish heavy metal band Children Of Bodom were forced to cancel their remaining live dates
as part of the No Fear Energy Tour with Lamb
Of God due to injuries sustained by guitarist and frontman Alexi Laiho. Laiho, 30, broke his
shoulder two weeks ago when he was ejected from his tour bus bunk after the
vehicle took a sharp turn. Laiho and the rest of Children Of Bodom were touring North America in support of the band's
critically acclaimed album Blooddrunk. Against recommendation, Laiho had decided to "bite the bullet" and remain
on tour, wearing the arm in a sling to restrict movement at all times when he
was not on stage. But after performing ten live dates with both the broken
shoulder and internal bleeding, the toll became too much for the guitar hero to
endure and Children Of
Bodom made the decision to cut its current tour
short, placing Laiho's long-term health as its first
priority. "After the New York
show (on May 8), I knew it was going to be over," Laiho
said in a statement. "During the third song, I started feeling like
someone was stabbing me in my lungs, my heart and my ribs. That was the kind of
pain that neither stubbornness, painkillers, nor alcohol
could alleviate. I wanted to try to keep going but after seeing a second doctor
in Philadelphia, I was basically told that I could fuck myself up for life if I
don't stop playing. Against all recommendation, I have played and sang for the
last 10 days in violent pain which has only made my condition worsen. So I
decided to listen to everyone around me, who were
telling me the best thing to do would be to go home and get some proper rest
and give my shoulder some time to heal. "This was a hard
decision for me and I feel bad about it," he continued. "But it is the
right thing to do if I want to keep making music. I apologize to our great fans
for not being there for the remaining shows and I want to thank all the guys
from the other bands — Lamb Of God, As I Lay
Dying, God Forbid and Municipal Waste — for backing me up on
this. Most of all, I want to thank our fans for still being there, showing
support, and continuing to rock out with me! I promise I will be back and I
hope you all will too! Horns up!" After a few weeks rest, Children Of Bodom will start their European summer festival run on
May 30 from Rock Hard Festival in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. All summer festival
dates will go down as planned and remain unaffected by Alexi's injury. As previously reported, Children Of Bodom performed an abbreviated, three-song set Friday
night (May 8) at the New York City stop of the "No Fear Energy Tour". Former Korn guitarist Brian
"Head" Welch has told Noisecreep that he is
fully happy with his decision to leave the band in 2005 and has not considered
a return to the group that made him famous. "If I ever felt God lead me
back to Korn
for some reason, I'd go," he said. Welch will launch the first
solo U.S. tour this month in support of his debut album, Save Me From Myself, which was released
September 9 on his Driven Music Group label. Later this summer, Welch will
appear on the main stage at the Cornerstone Festival in Bushnell, Illinois on
July 2, and in Las Vegas at the 20,000-seat Thomas
& Mack Arena in August (exact date and billing to be announced May 1). More
tour dates will be announced in the coming weeks.
Welch's backing band will
consist of the following musicians:
Scott Von Heldt (guitar) Head is very excited about
hitting the tour circuit again. "I did my first show in Phoenix last
weekend and it was nuts," he told Noisecreep.
"Besides the normal crowd, the promoter bused in a bunch of drug-addicted
kids that lived on the streets and you could see them change right before your
eyes. They were jumping up and down. At the end of the show, we all shouted
together like an army, 'Jesus Christ, change me. Make me a new person.'" Head also shared the story
of overcoming drug addiction with the crowd before launching into the title
track. "That was emotional and there were a lot of tears," he
recalled. "Overall, it's a very draining experience, with kids jumping up
and down, sweating, crying, hugging and screaming for change. It's like a huge
heavy metal party with God." Save
Me From Myself sold 7,800 copies in the
United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 63 on The
Billboard 200 chart. The CD was released on September 9 through Driven Music
Group (distribution by Ryko/Warner Music Group), the label Welch co-founded with music execs Greg Shanaberger and Mark Nawara. Save
Me From Myself was produced by Head, who
recorded the music off and on for the past two years in Phoenix, Arizona. It
features renowned musicians Tony Levin (Peter
Gabriel, David Bowie) and Josh Freese (A Perfect Circle,
Nine Inch Nails), and was mixed by
Ralph Patlan and Bob Clearmountain.
It's a testimony of Head's life as he battled with drug addiction and leaving Korn, and
finding spirituality. Former Skid Row singer Sebastian Bach performed this past Saturday (May 9)
for the New York Mets Autism Awareness Day at Citi
Field in Flushing, New York. Bach played a short set in support of VH1 Classic
Rock Autism, a campaign that is designed to help educate parents and build
awareness about autism. VH1 Classic Rock Autism also helps to raise funds for a
variety of autism research, advocacy and support organizations. Watch fan-filmed video
footage of the performance below. Another clip can be viewed at this location.
(Note: Bach's performance reportedly took place 30 minutes prior to the first
pitch.) Bach is best known for
selling 20 million albums as the former lead singer of Skid Row. He has gone on to star on Broadway and television,
including five seasons on CW's "Gilmore Girls", as well as hit shows
on VH1, MTV and CMT. Bach's latest project is Angel Down, his first solo album since 1999. The record features 14
new songs with a guest appearance by Guns
N' Roses front man Axl Rose on three recordings,
including a blistering version of Aerosmith's "Back In
The Saddle".
Megadeth mainman Dave Mustaine has issued the following audio update at
TheLiveLine.com: "I'm going to be
working on the new Will Ferrell movie 'Land Of The Lost'... and going to be
putting some music on that. I went and saw the movie last week and it was
hilarious. I loved it. I love Will Ferrell; think he's hilarious anyways. But,
yeah, we're getting ready to send some music up to these guys right now and
you're listening to some in the background, and then I'll be heading up there
this week to hopefully finish all this off with their guys. And man, how
exciting for me." On January 7, Megadeth
commenced the recording process for its twelfth studio album at the band's own
Vic's Garage studio in San Marcos, California. The CD is once again being
helmed by acclaimed British producer Andy "Undie"
Sneap, who produced Megadet's last album, "United Abominations" (May 2007, Roadrunner
Records). Tentatively due in September
via Roadrunner, Megadeth's
forthcoming LP will be the group's first with guitarist Chris Broderick, who
replaced Glen Drover at the end of 2007. Primal
